Family & Community
Reflection:
A very important aspect of teaching for me is building connections that extend beyond the classroom. Not only with students, but with families as well. During my student teaching, I took the initiative to create a ClassDojo to strengthen my communication with families. Through ClassDojo, I was able to update families on important events and highlights of classroom activities. I created Monthly Recap Newsletters that summarized what we have done for the month, along with an "Upcoming News" section to inform families on classroom updates.
My classroom had many Spanish speakers. Due to this, I would always make sure to add a Spanish section for families to access the information in a language they were comfortable with.
In addition to incorporating technology for communication, I also would speak to families at the door, during arrival or dismissal and attended after-school events. Getting to know my students families on a personal level allowed me build a trusting relationship with them. For my families who spoke Spanish, I was able to use conversational Spanish to communicate with parents about their childs academic progress and classroom information.
